Aside from the striking absence of her wavy blond hair, Nicole Graham doesn’t seem all that different from the energetic, bubbly girl she was when she started her junior year at Greenwich High School last fall.

There certainly is no sign that only six months ago, she could barely hold her head up.

Not long into September, her junior year took a drastic turn. Nicole’s pediatrician brought her into the office, alone, to give her some news.

During the summer, she had started feeling pain in her back, and noticed a strange rash on her stomach that looked like sun poisoning. That, combined with shortness of breath, unusual for a runner, drove her to the doctor.

Now, the diagnosis was in, and it definitely wasn’t sun poisoning. She had leukemia.
